A deadly sickness swept through the Darkscale population, wiping out the entire tribe. All that was left were a few clutches of eggs, and it was doubtful they would survive. But to the amazement to all, the eggs actually hatched. But these were different, whether it be because of the sickness or just an evolutionary step, they grew up unusually fast. They seemed a bit smaller, but were much more intelligent, some even capable of simple speech. They have also developed feathery wings which they kept folded under flaps on their backs. They weren't capable of flying, but they are able to glide for short distances. One slightly larger and more intelligent one became the dominant male, and Kristof gave him the name "Scales".
