"Souls mean nothing to this man, who places his faith in machines and his own mind of steel. His heart burning with a desire for justice, he sets forth on a perilous journey to prove himself equal to the strongest of warriors."
The self styled 'Doktor' A. Liedner has been on a quest for revenge for more than fifteen years now, hunting for the Azure Knight that tore through his hometown in a blaze of destruction one cold winter in the year 1590.
Although his parents succumbed disease at a young age, Liedner was lucky enough to be taken in as an apprentice by a local craftsman, Albrecht Krause, creator of fireworks and clockwork novelties for the rich of Europe. Liedner spent much of his childhood sweeping the floors and washing the windows of Albrecht's little workshop, watching the old man create the tiny clockwork soldiers he was so famous for. Liedner soon demonstrated an aptitude for the craft, quickly taking up the finer points of his mentor's artifice and eventually progressing to Journeyman status, to the delight of his Master. He lived happily with his teacher, preparing his master-work for submission to the guild, until the night that tragedy struck.
The Azure Knight, Nightmare, came to the small town in his rampage across Europe, massacring the populace. Though both Liedner and Albrecht managed to escape, the latter had suffered fatal wounds, and died in his apprentice's care days later. At that moment, Liedner swore revenge, traveling in the wake of Nightmare's rampage, searching for those who would teach him the skills he needed to slay the evil knight. To his dismay, he found he had little talent for alchemy and swordplay, and in frustration turned to the one skill he considered his strongest. Returning to the ruins of his hometown, he gathered the gears and cogs used in his master's craft, using what savings he had to purchase a suit of plate armor. Over the course of many days, he slowly fitted gears, cogs, springs and wires to the armor, crafting intricate clockwork designed to increase the wearer's strength and speed, layering alloys over the plate of the armor to increase it's durability. He added hidden weapons to his creation, a pair of gauntlets that contained retractable, spring-loaded short swords, and reinforced plates to the boots that allowed him to kick with incredible force. Despite Liedner's own clumsiness, cowardice, and unsuitability for battle, and the malfunctions of his prototype armor that would cause a joint or limb to lock up or jam, or become stuck, endlessly repeating a motion and dragging the hapless wearer along with it, the suit worked, and while wearing it no common soldier or thug was a match for him.
When he finally had finished his armor, he stepped outside his workshop for the first time in weeks, shielding his weary eyes from the rising sun. He raised his gauntleted fists to the heavens and proclaimed "My artifice is equal to the power of anyone, even the demon sword! I'll take my revenge with this armor, and prove it!". Thus his quest began, a wandering craftsman who walks the path of a warrior.
Only time shall tell if his tale will end in triumph, or in tragedy.

Author Notes
Soulcalibur V
Liedner was conceptualized way back before the game was even released, as part of a brainstorming activity about how to make the personalized movesets of the Soul Calibur world fit created characters. Eventually I picked up Dampierre's style and made the character. To my pleasant surprise, I rather like Dampierre's style, so Liedner has remained prominently in my roster ever since.
This version of his costume is the version I first gave him, deciding to try out the Ancient Armor set. I'm not really a fan of the giant spiked shoes, though they work conceptually with Dampierre's many kicking attacks. I think it overall works, but I wish I could have given him a belt to go with the gear around his waist, and chosen different boots.
As an aside, I've decided that Liedner V Doomhorse (Picture 5) is pretty much the best thing ever. I often wonder how Perse chooses the opponents for the battle screenshots, but having him square off with War gave a striking tableau, a dramatic battle tinged with silliness, quite fitting. Does this mean that my characters are a canon part of fiction now?
The second costume I'm rather a fan of, and several of the people I've shown it to say they prefer it over his original outfit. It sadly isn't an original, this design was shamelessly 'inspired' by an unfinished outfit that was posted on the original Soul Gateway site by Sheodon. A few minor tweaks of my own make this probably my favorite outfit for Liedner.
While the screenshots here do a great job of showcasing some of my favorite moves for Liedner (The ground slide and his Critical Edge), I really have to chuckle whenever I see Liedner's face in the sixth screenshot. It's pretty much the D: emoticon, and that's fantastic.
